It is a legal requirement for every domestic worker to be registered for UIF in South Africa. If you have an employee who works 24 hours or more in a month for you, you need to register him/her with the Department of Labour for UIF.

The employer will be registered as an employer of a domestic employee and the employer will receive the UIF number and any employees they have will be placed under the employer’s UIF number for the time in which they work. When your employee leaves you, you terminate them from your profile. Employees do not each receive their own UIF number.



The employer needs to contribute 1% of the employee’s salary amount per month from their own pocket and the employee also needs to contribute 1% of their salary amount per month and the 2% needs to be paid over to The Department of Labour every month by the employer. This must be done by the 7th of each month

You can register in-person at a Labour Centre near you (bringing along copies of the below mentioned forms), you’ll be able to register via:

  • The Department of Labour’s online system here ufiling.labour.gov.za
  • Email the UI-8D and UI-19 forms to at domestics@uif.gov.za
  • Mail the forms to: The UIF, Pretoria 0052

Once registered, you’ll receive a contributor number also called a UIF reference number which you’ll be able to use via uFiling to make payments.
