The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is responsible for paying social grants to eligible South Africans, including the Old Age Grant (pension). This grant is a vital source of income for many elderly South Africans, and it is important to know how to apply for it.

Application Days For SASSA Old Age Grant

SASSA offices are open Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 16:00. The offices are closed on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays

Who is eligible for the Old Age Grant?

To be eligible for the Old Age Grant, you must:

• Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
• Be 60 years or older
• Not be in receipt of another social grant for yourself
• Not be cared for in a state institution
• Not earn more than R86 280 per year if you are single or R172 560 per year if you are married
• Not have assets worth more than R1 227 600 if you are single or R2 455 200 if you are married

How to apply for the Old Age Grant

You can apply for the Old Age Grant online, at your nearest SASSA office, or by post.

To apply online:

1. Go to the SASSA website: https://www.sassa.gov.za/
2. Click on the “Grants” tab
3. Click on the “Old Age Grant” link
4. Follow the instructions on the screen

To apply at your nearest SASSA office:

1. Find your nearest SASSA office: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
2. Go to the office and take the following documents with you:
   • Your ID document
   • Proof of residence
   • Your bank account details (if you want the grant to be paid into your bank account)

To apply by post:

1. Download the Old Age Grant application form: https://www.sassa.gov.za/
2. Fill out the form and send it to your nearest SASSA office

What happens after you apply?

Once you have applied for the Old Age Grant, SASSA will process your application. This may take a few weeks. If your application is approved, you will receive a notification from SASSA. The grant will then be paid into your bank account or you can collect it from your nearest pay point.

Important dates for pensioners in 2024

• The next payment date for the Old Age Grant is 1 February 2024.
• The application deadline for the Old Age Grant for the 2024/25 financial year is 31 March 2024.
